SEA Code of Professional Conduct and Policy on Harassment, Discrimination, and Ethical Research
The Southern Economic Association (SEA) Code of Professional Conduct and Policy on Harassment and Discrimination and Ethical Research applies to all SEA sponsored activities. Those attending and participating in the Annual Meeting of the SEA are expected to adhere to these policies regarding professional conduct. The SEA views it as a responsibility of each individual member to be proactive in helping to mitigate or avoid harm, which may include reporting to appropriate authority when the member witnesses unacceptable behavior.
SEA Code of Professional Conduct
The SEA seeks to provide a safe and productive meeting environment that fosters the exchange of scientific ideas, fair treatment for all participants that are free of harassment and discrimination based on social identity. SEA members and participants have a professional obligation to conduct civil and respectful discourse in all forums.
Respectful discussion and debate are essential elements of scholarly interaction, and this policy encourages that. Paper presenters, discussants, and other conference participants are expected to treat others with respect and dignity, to follow venue rules, and to alert staff or security of any dangerous or harassing situations.
All participants are expected to abide by standards of scientific integrity and professional ethics, by disclosing any financial interests or other ties that might be viewed as creating conflicts of interest.
SEA Policy on Harrassment and Discrimination
The SEA does not tolerate discrimination or harassment in any of its activities whether in person or virtual. Discrimination is the harmful prejudicial treatment of individuals based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability status, or any other attribute. Harassment includes speech or any behavior, such as but not limited to; remarks – both spoken and in other media – bullying, physical contact, stalking, unwanted or demeaning sexual advances or requests for sexual favors, and unwelcome attention that creates an intimidating, harmful, hostile, offensive, or threatening environment. Please remember that behavior that is acceptable to one person may not be acceptable to another, and that harassment, even if intended or delivered in a joking manner, is unacceptable.
